Spanish (español) is an Iberian Romance language originally from the northern area of Spain. Almost half a billion people worldwide speak Spanish, making it the most popular Romance language and one of the most widely spoken languages in the world. Mexico has the largest population of Spanish-speakers in the world, with over 100 million Spanish speakers, followed by Colombia, Spain and Argentina

Spanish is spoken in 21 countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Equatorial Guinea, Guatemala, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama , Paraguay, Peru, Puerto Rico, Spain, Uruguay, and Venezuela. The vast majority of its speakers are located in Spain and the Western Hemisphere.  It is the official language of Spain, most Latin American countries and Equatorial Guinea.

Spanish is one of the official languages of the Organization of American States, the South American Community of Nations, and the European Union.

Spanish is also one of six official working languages of the United Nations and one of the most used global languages. It is spoken most extensively in North and South America, certain parts of Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania. It is also the second most widely spoken language in the United States and arguably the most popular foreign language for study in US schools and Universities.
